Slipper Girl by Adele Royce is about Skylar Van Ness, a 27-year-old woman who discovers that her dark past has returned to torment her. Right before her father's wedding, Skylar reads a shocking email, and she learns that her mother knows everything about her and is coming to Las Vegas to visit her. Skylar hasn't seen or heard from her mother in years and plans to never see her again, especially since her life has changed for the better because of her father. However, she is afraid that the awful things she saw and experienced during childhood and early adolescence while living with her mother in Amsterdam will come to light and that everyone will find out about her darkest secrets. Yet Skylar isn't the only one who wants to get rid of her mother. Her father, now married to another woman, also feels threatened by her. Soon, Skylar realizes she is being stalked and suspects it's her mother, but over time, other suspects emerge.
Slipper Girl by Adele Royce is a page-turning thriller that delivers everything that makes a book worthwhile: thought-provoking plot twists, intriguing characters and family dynamics, a touch of romance, nail-biting suspense, huge stakes, and themes of deception, blackmail, trust, identity, resilience, and redemption. The novel is so well-crafted and compelling that it really sparked my interest in the author's other works. This story is a must-read for all thriller and suspense fans, as it follows a smart, resilient woman who, after building a new life despite the terrible trauma and challenges she faced, is now forced to fight on her own so that the depth and enormity of her dirty past won't be exposed.
