Ever had your curious youngster watch you do yoga and try to copy your fish, cat, cobra or bridge positions? What fun it is to see them trying to imitate mommy or daddy. Now, how about indulging that curiosity even further by letting your child experience the joy of yoga, not just by watching you, but through this delightful and very different book, Smile with Yoga by L. Rekem.
Using rhyming couplets and beautiful illustrations set against brightly colored pages, Rekem sits your little girl on a mat beside a lovely butterfly or shows your playful dog using your boy’s back for support while they both try to do the “downward dog” pose. Animals and children populate the pages of this unique book where youngsters not only find out how to do the poses, but also learn a bit about the animals as they read along. Gosh, even I discovered facts about our animal friends that I didn’t know, e.g. the hump on the camel’s back stores fat, not water; kangaroos can hop forward, but not backward! Why not? Smile with Yoga provides the explanations.
You and your child will love reading this charming book and trying out the poses together. Then, when you get to the end, Rekem provides 5 illustrated pages for quick reference, followed by activities that would make for even more fun times at home and especially in a classroom. Just picture children creating a “downward dog tunnel” or trying to hop backwards like a “wacky kangaroo”. How about a variation on Simon Says, i.e. “Yogi Says”? Or why not put on some music and do the “Yoga Freeze Dance”? The possibilities are endless and so is the fun! Smile with Yoga is one highly recommended book for children and adults to share.
