Snip and Bittersweet by Amy Laundrie is a great story of friendship and adventure. The Podkins are small creatures that look like humans but are about the size of a sparrow. They live in harmony with nature. Among them is Snip, a quiet boy who likes to draw. When he meets his friend Bittersweet, Granny Nightshade, who can glimpse the future, warns them that trouble awaits them. Winter is approaching, so all the Podkins organize to fly together on cranes to a warmer place, but Snip and Bittersweet tumble from their birds. Snip injures his leg, so they have to find a way back to the village. On their journey, they face snow, a risky canoe ride, and even an encounter with a human child who wants to capture them. Will they be safe?
I like Amy Laundrie's writing style. Her vivid and detailed descriptions make you feel as if you are there. The story starts serenely as we get to know the characters. Later, it adopts a dynamic pace with increasingly complicated challenges. The narrative is fluid and presents good values, such as family togetherness, respect for elders, and nature. I like Snip for his calm and responsible manner. Even with his injured leg, he keeps moving forward, showing that he can overcome any obstacle with perseverance. Bittersweet stands out for her enthusiasm and fearlessness. They complement and help each other in everything, demonstrating true teamwork. The illustrations by Anthony M. Grimaldi are delightful, with their variety of natural environments and expressive characters. Snip and Bittersweet teach young readers the value of a great friendship and the joy of having a spirit of adventure.
