So Where Does Magic Sleep? by Cynthia L Clark is a lovely book for cat-loving children and their parents. Jake, Axel, and their friends were playing in the yard of their parents’ farm when a black cat wandered in as if he wanted to join the fun. The kids thought that he was lost and decided to post a sign, just in case the owners might notice and take him home. Nobody showed up to claim the cat, so they decided to give it a name. Since it appeared just like magic, they named him Magic. Over the following days, Magic walked all over the farm, trying out different places to sleep, and the kids followed him around, waiting to see where Magic would finally settle down. After a while, when that did not happen, they decided to make him a permanent place to sleep out of an old box and an old beach towel, and painted “MAGIC” on the side of the box. That seemed to do the trick because almost immediately, Magic lay down on the towel inside the box, but later in the night, he finally chose his place on the mat in front of the door.

This story is not only about cats and their habits, but also about caring and recognizing animals as living, breathing, conscious life forms that have their own way of finding a home and relating to humans. It is a very important lesson that children should learn as early as possible, so they grow up with the right attitude toward animals. The short, rhyming verses between the drawings tell the story, and the drawings illustrate what is happening, so children can imagine being there and witnessing the events. The author and Blueberry Illustrations did a very good job of introducing kids to the concept of caring about pets and relating to them. I recommend So Where Does Magic Sleep? by Cynthia L Clark to young readers and their parents who care about instilling the right values in their children.
