Sol the Sunflower by Amora Correa is a picture book that features the story of Sol, a magical sunflower that stands out from the rest of her friends. Her friends wish to sparkle like her, but they do not know how. Being asked, one morning Sol tells them about how she “soaks up the sun’s love.” That very day, with Sol’s help, the sunflowers get to know more about her secret through experience. The story beautifully portrays the significance of making the most out of each day, be it pleasant or challenging.
I feel that Amora Correa’s Sol the Sunflower has a message for all of us, irrespective of our age. We sometimes fail to appreciate the good days, and quite often, we struggle to find hope while having a bad time. With Sol and her friends, Amora reminds us that it is up to us to utilize the blessings when things are in our favor, and when the time is dark, we must look for the messages that life tries to convey through hardships. The book not only teaches readers this important lesson but also encourages them to cherish hope. Another beautiful thing about the book is the admiration that Sol’s friends have for her. Though they wish to be like her, they show no sign of jealousy. I also loved the illustrations; they are simple yet bright and attractive enough to keep young readers interested in the story. I would recommend the book to all readers.
