Author Roberta Rogow draws on her talents as a musician, storyteller, librarian, and fan of everything science fiction to present this fascinating collection of filk (science fiction musical genre) songs, Songs of Space. What truly exists on Venus and Mars pales in comparison to what our imagination can create. A child will find much joy in learning about the solar system and its planets through a song sung to the tune of "A Song of the Weather" by Flanders and Swann. Read about the robot Sojourner, whose first trek on Mars paved the way for future exploratory endeavors and, hopefully, someday, human colonization. Learn about the story of Major Sergei Krikalev and why he couldn't return from the Mir Space Station.
Songs of Space is hilarious, educational, motivational, and everything you want in a book full of filk songs. Roberta Rogow's love of science fiction and music really shines through the pages, with songs that you end up singing along with, at least the ones whose tunes you've heard before. For me, the best thing about this book is that it will appeal to older as well as younger readers. Children will have an absolute blast with this book. In fact, anyone who loves space-related stuff or science fiction will have a great time with these songs. Rogow's rhymes are very catchy and capture the rhythm of the songs they're based upon perfectly. If you're already a fan of the artists featured here, then you will enjoy the book even more. I loved it, and so should you!
