When you’re from Chicago you never really get used to the bipolar weather, but you tolerate it. Patricia Jordan unfortunately has a love-hate relationship with the temperamental beast known as Chicago weather, so it is just her luck that her October countdown to summer and warm weather is interrupted by a forced trip home to Oklahoma, also known as the place on earth she would rather not be. In Sooner or Later we follow Patricia as she navigates the dreadfully choppy waters of her small home town where she has to face a cheating ex-boyfriend, an overly critical mother, and an entire town that knows about the biggest hurt she’s ever had.

The characters in Sooner or Later are wonderfully written from Artie to Leslie, Harry, and even Patricia’s mom. Melissa Hladik Meyer’s style shines through without giving all her characters the same voice. The story of Patricia and Butch is a complicated one, and while it was excellently written, I can’t say I was pleased with her choice. I enjoyed following Patricia as she dealt with a crazy jealous former classmate, a dishonest coach who is also an ex-classmate, and a very eager ex trying desperately to win her back. I wished the end had turned out slightly differently because Patricia seemed to be such an independent woman and, honestly, the weather seems a small price to pay compared to all the drama that occurred during her few weeks back in Oklahoma. Melissa Hladik Meyer writes this story with a great sense of humor that’s evident in just about every sentence.
