Sore Like an Eagle by Marc Jedel is book three in the Redwoods County Mystery series. Andy Shirley is trying to keep the Quilt House Inn afloat during the slow season. He meets with the manager of the Monte Rio Community Center to advertise his archery lessons to their members. Pleased with the outcome of his negotiations, Andy is all set to leave when he hears a scream coming from the pool where they were previously having water aerobics. Now, one of the participants, May Zaben, is floating face down. At first, her death appears uncertain, but questions begin to surface after the medical examiner’s preliminary assessment points to diabetic ketoacidosis. But Deirdre Odom insists that May was never diabetic. The suspect pool begins to widen and includes people from May’s workplace at the Guerneville Clinic to people at the community center. Will Andy’s sleuthing lead him to the right suspect?
Marc Jedel has been consistent with this series. He has crafted another twisted murder mystery that I enjoyed reading. The humor, small-town gossip, and investigation were well balanced. Andy’s dry wit, devotion to his dog Fifi, and his awkward attempts at socializing gave him more depth. Deirdre Odom, the mayor and a friend of May’s, helped push Andy to investigate her death. Charlie brought sarcasm and charm into the storyline. Detective Louis Richter’s disdain for Andy brought tension and friction into the narrative. There was a long list of suspects I was pointing fingers at, like Diane Hollister and Sindy Caleira. I loved how each chapter added a clue or suspect. Fans of similar sleuth mysteries like Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death by M.C. Beaton would enjoy Sore Like an Eagle.
