Souls of the Never: Tales of the Neverwar Book One by CJ Rutherford presents to the reader a multifaceted universe, taking us across time and space. Long ago, the universe was close to destruction. Tenybris, a power-hungry elf, is taken in by an evil essence. Corrupted by this power, he dooms all to death, yet he is stopped in time and imprisoned. On Earth, Katheryne suffers from horrific nightmares. Then she meets Derren, a Liberi, searching for her across various time periods. She instantly feels he is more, and the pair experience a sudden rush of love. Derren tells her she is the one he has been searching for, the Foundation. His job is to take her back to Sanctuary to help defeat the darkness threatening to overtake the Veil. However, there are other forces at play, corruption rampant through Sanctuary, and those who do not wish Derren to succeed in his task, and would see harm come to Katheryne. When Derren is kidnapped by those forces, will Katheryne manage to save him in time?
Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical when I started this novel. There were a few jumps between characters and time periods that I found a little confusing, but as the novel went on, I began to iron out those details in my head and discovered a wonderful and unique story of a young woman with an interesting fate put before her. I enjoyed the fight sequences, as well as the heartfelt ones. Mr. Rutherford has a very creative imagination, and keeps you wondering. Each character has an exceptional personality, with clear goals and desires, and I didn’t feel like I was left wondering about any major story details. I do look forward to seeing where Mr. Rutherford takes his story. Souls of the Never: Tales of the Neverwar Book One by CJ Rutherford was certainly a surprise, and I’m very glad I had the opportunity to read it.
