The South Pole is a long way from Santa at the North Pole, but the residents there still love to celebrate Christmas. In South Pole Santa by Janice Hostetter, two penguin siblings have different ways to prepare for the holiday season. Sophie enjoys all the preparations, from making cookies to decorating. Sam loves the presents. He makes sure to write his letter to Santa early because it will take a while to arrive at the North Pole. Sam also helps all his friends write their letters and get them in the mail. Then Christmas Eve arrives, and as the animals enjoy the snow and Christmas tree, something unexpected happens. Will Sam and Sophie be able to help?
South Pole Santa is a fun Christmas story filled with all the things that make the winter season so unique. Embedded in this cheerful tale is a gentle reminder that the presents, decorations, and lights are not the most important part of Christmas. Sharing all these things with the ones you love is why it is memorable. The illustrations, also by Janice Hostetter, are filled with holiday cheer. Sophie is decked out in a pink scarf and earmuffs, while Sam is sporting a red scarf and Santa hat. The large font makes it ideal for kids who want to try reading along. As a retired children's librarian, I've read hundreds of Christmas stories. South Pole Santa has all the right elements to make it a winner, with a unique location, a sweet message, and, of course, a happy ending.
