Stand Up, Fight Back: A Story about Being Bullied by Jeremy M Burke explores the reality of bullying, a painful one that causes a lot of suffering to school children. In this nonfiction narrative, the author shares the painful memories of 4th Grade and the effect that bullying had on his life. While earlier years in school were fun, moving up to Grade school became a veritable nightmare for the narrator. The bullying started slowly, in the bus, and in the schoolyard, and public places, with the bullies inventing something new to terrorize the victim with. From the very beginning, the author states: "If I could go back and do things differently, I would. I would stand up for myself and the other kids being terrorized and abused." This is a statement that portrays his profound regret of those memories.

In this memoir, the author states that bullying in school began a very dark period for him, and this is an experience shared by millions of children across the world. This is a poignant story and it is interesting how the author explores his pain of being bullied and honestly shares the frustration of not being able to do something at the time. It is a story that strongly resonated with my own personal experience. It is so real and explores the tactics used by bullies to cause suffering to others. The book offers practical steps and suggestions that can be taken to address this painful epidemic in schools and in society. Stand Up, Fight Back: A Story about Being Bullied is one that everyone should read. While it entertains readers, it has the power to create a strong awareness of an evil that destroys the lives of young people and children. Jeremy M Burke’s story is a gift that should be shared with children and an instrument that older readers need in order to understand a social ill their children are faced with.
