Stand Up Speak Up: How Survivors Created a Movement to End Sexual Violence by Tim Lennon is a powerful and deeply informative exploration of the survivor-led movement against sexual violence. Drawing from his personal experiences as a survivor of childhood abuse by a Catholic priest, Lennon provides a comprehensive account of the efforts to expose abuse, hold institutions accountable, and support those harmed. The book is meticulously researched, blending historical context, survivor stories, and the evolution of advocacy organizations to create a compelling narrative. Lennon highlights the critical role of groups like SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) and other survivor-led initiatives in challenging systemic abuse and cover-ups. He examines the broader societal and institutional failures that have allowed abuse to persist, from the Catholic Church to the Boy Scouts, universities, and beyond.

The book addresses difficult topics, such as the role of patriarchy, systemic racism, and class privilege in perpetuating abuse and silencing victims. It also critiques the use of non-disclosure agreements and other tactics employed by powerful institutions to suppress the truth. The narrative is filled with survivor stories, grassroots organizing, and the impact of media in amplifying voices. Tim Lennon’s call for a national convention of survivors and his emphasis on the need for continued activism provide a clear roadmap for the movement’s future. His writing is clear and engaging, balancing personal anecdotes with broader analysis to make complex issues understandable without oversimplifying them. Stand Up Speak Up is an important contribution to the ongoing fight against sexual violence. Lennon’s dedication to this cause is apparent on every page, making this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking to understand or join the movement.

Tim Lennon’s life changed after a trusted friend of his parents molested him. At the time, he was too young to understand what had happened, which made it difficult for him to tell his parents. The abuse went unchecked until circumstances removed that individual from their lives. Even decades later, now a parent himself, the memories of those dark days still cause him to shudder. To confront his demons, Tim began researching his abuser and accumulated a wealth of knowledge on a topic so disturbing that it rarely comes under public scrutiny. Stand Up Speak Up is his account of the evolution of various organizations that have emerged to end all forms of sexual violence, along with an overview of the progress made.

Tim Lennon thoroughly dissects the definition of sexual violence in Stand Up Speak Up, using his personal experiences to help readers understand that only someone who has experienced this terrifying ordeal can truly grasp how deeply it impacts victims. He shows courage by sharing the details of each experience and providing context to explain why victims find it hard to speak out. He educates readers on the widespread problem, referencing well-known incidents and lesser-known cases across different sectors of society. What stands out about this book is the detailed explanation of how established systems manipulate the nation’s laws to avoid justice and how government actions unintentionally enable abusers. Lennon also mentions different organizations that have worked to expose abusers and support victims’ rights, offering readers a valuable resource in an emergency. Stand Up Speak Up is eye-opening and a must-read for every parent.

Stand Up Speak Up by Tim Lennon is a non-fiction journey from fear to activism, beginning with public protests against clergy abuse in Santa Rosa and the San Francisco Bay Area. He recounts sharing his experiences in support groups, helping survivors nationwide through calls and emails, and eventually volunteering full-time. Lennon details Barbara Blaine's founding of SNAP and Phil Saviano’s investigative work that aided the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team. He highlights other survivors’ efforts, including Christa Brown’s Baptist clergy database, Andrea Constand’s case against Bill Cosby, and Rachael Denhollander confronting Larry Nassar. Lennon examines systemic abuse across institutions, media exposure, reform initiatives, and the emergence of the Survivors Movement, showing how survivor-led advocacy shaped legal change, public awareness, and accountability, creating networks and campaigns to support victims and challenge entrenched structures of abuse.

Tim Lennon’s Stand Up Speak Up is an extraordinary and inspiring account that shines a light on the courage of survivors and the power of advocacy. Lennon courageously shares his own experiences of abuse, exposing cases of repeated reassignment and institutional secrecy. Lennon's story is absolutely heartbreaking and details the unimaginable, allowing readers to understand firsthand the scope of abuse. I found the sections that provided the most novel information to me are on the prevalence of sexual abuse against men, referencing Oprah Winfrey’s program featuring male survivors and Tyler Perry’s encouragement for disclosure. I was not old enough to have a broader picture of Anita Hill's congressional hearing, but I went back to watch it because of Lennon's work. The research is exhaustive, and Lennon's passionate activism is really, really heartening, making this book a truly remarkable and motivating chronicle of determination, awareness, and the ongoing fight for justice. Very highly recommended.

Stand Up Speak Up by Timothy Lennon explores the emergence and impact of a global survivors' movement against sexual abuse, drawing heavily from his own harrowing experiences and decades of activism. The book blends personal memoir with historical analysis, beginning with Lennon's childhood abuse by Father Peter B. Murphy in 1959 in Sioux City, Iowa. At that time, the priest abused him repeatedly, including a violent rape that Lennon repressed for over 50 years. As a devout Catholic boy from a large Irish family, Lennon grappled with faith corruption, buried trauma, and institutional cover-ups by the diocese, which transferred Murphy multiple times despite prior accusations. The narrative evolves into Lennon's transformation from victim to advocate, detailing his involvement with the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), founded by Barbara Blaine in 1988 after her own abuse. When Lennon served as SNAP's board president from 2018 to 2021, he organized international events like All Survivors Day and confronted the Vatican. The book explores the epidemic's scope, affecting one in five people, the reasons survivors stay silent (e.g., shame, PTSD), tactics of powerful institutions and transfers, the role of media exposés (e.g., Boston Globe's Spotlight), #MeToo, and coalitions. It includes endnotes, an index, and calls to action, emphasizing how survivors have built organizations, reformed laws in dozens of states, and shifted cultural narratives since 2000.

I found Timothy Lennon's book to be powerful, making it an essential read for anyone interested in social justice or trauma recovery. His raw honesty about personal PTSD, therapy like EMDR, and "righteous anger" as fuel for advocacy humanizes the statistics. He transforms abstract horrors into relatable struggles. There are details on clergy abuse which provide depth, but Lennon broadens it to include Hollywood scandals, Olympic gymnasts, and Jeffrey Epstein. The writing is accessible yet analytical, with a celebratory tone that honors unsung heroes like Blaine and SNAP volunteers, avoiding sensationalism in favor of empowerment. Stand Up Speak Up not only educates but inspires readers to join the fight, proving that silence can transform into a roar for change. As a Catholic teacher and safeguard educator, I highly recommend this book to the clergy, parents, leaders, and survivors. It is a reminder of our duty to protect God's children. The author is an inspiring example of what it means to instill faith, hope, and love in society.
