Still Doing It: The Con is On, Again by Jill Vance is an intriguing novella reminiscent of Oceans 11. Written from a first-person perspective, we are introduced to our female lead, a con artist itching to pull off her next scam. Unfortunately, her team needs a couple of extra members before they can set their scheme in motion. Moreover, her plan is so daring that even her veteran team members express doubt that anyone would fall for it. The new members, discontented actors, are also skeptical. Can she convince everyone on her team to go through with the con? The title of the book seems to answer these questions. More importantly, will the group pull off the con successfully?
Jill Vance does an amazing job of advancing the plot and building suspense. Still Doing It left me wondering what the outcome would be until the end. The characters all felt fully fleshed out. I enjoyed the dialogue and it was used expertly to simultaneously develop the characters and drive the storyline. I especially liked the pacing of the novella. It is always a good sign when you finish a chapter and can’t wait to start the next one to find out what happens next. Of note, there were a couple of scenes involving nudity, although this is not an erotic story as such. I would recommend this book to those looking for a short but thrilling read.
