Strange Bedfellows: Fun with Etymology by Anil is unlike any book I have read before. Etymology involves the study of the origin of words while strange bedfellows indicate unlikely companions or allies. The author goes into this in the introduction, in addition to providing inspirations and how to read the book. The introduction explains that this book combines the two definitions by providing words that seem like they may not go together and showing how they do. Specifically, the author tries to provide amusing pairs, phrases, and sentences to keep the reader going. Accompanying each set of words are comments from the author. These may be simple side notes or stories. At times, illustrations are worked into the statements as well. The book then ends with an appendix where the author provides a list of synonyms, antonyms, and compounds for readers.
As stated, this book is truly unique and I quite enjoyed it. It was comical and something that I could pick up and read for a few minutes or far longer. The book is separated into parts but has no set chapters. There are breaks on each page that allowed me to stop if I felt like it and I could really start reading wherever I chose. Strange Bedfellows: Fun with Etymology was also a light, funny read. There were pieces of alliteration that didn’t seem to go together but just made me giggle. It certainly breaks through some of the tension of other books that I've read. I’d recommend this book for those looking for something fun to read.
