Summer Spark by Ginnie Carmichael is the story of Elsie Anderson and Alex Becker. Elsie is a single mother who uprooted her life in Seattle to keep her young daughter Sophie out of trouble. It wasn’t the first time, but this time they ended up in Smithfield, Virginia. So when she pulls up in front of the colonial home with number 34 on the front, the last thing on her mind is men and falling in love. But one invite to karaoke night changes all that when she meets a handsome man with a silky voice called Alex Becker. Ginnie Carmichael beautifully illustrates the conflict within Alex and Elsie and how it is affecting their ability to move forward. Together.
Summer Spark is the perfect name for this story because there seemed to be a spark between Alex and Elsie almost from the moment they met. Even though their lives are so different - he’s a firefighter and she writes children’s books; he’s a widow and she was burned once in love and decided she wasn’t going back for more; he has a small kid and she has a teenager. Despite that, Ginnie Carmichael writes their budding romance beautifully as it grows. Of course this is the first story in a series, so what ultimately becomes of their fledgling emotions is yet to be seen. This is a cute short story in a small town, featuring two adorable kids, which adds a nice touch of humor to a story where the main characters have had so much sadness in their lives.
