Summertime Dream is the story of Margie and Chris. She is a Falk’s Bend local who has recently recovered from a serious health problem, while he is in town to take care of an inheritance. They meet during a holiday picnic and hit it off, despite their differences. In addition to this being a love story, Babette James has created something of a mystery surrounding the life of Chris’ grandmother, from whom he has inherited a mansion. While cleaning out the mansion, Margie and Chris discover a mystery and fall in love as they attempt to solve it.
Margie and Chris shouldn’t really work as a couple since they both feel they have so much going against them. He is worried that his age makes him an inappropriate choice for her while she is self-conscious about her surgical scars and terrified of being physically rejected. In Summertime Dream, they are both looking for love yet they are terrified of going after it. But what is so great is that instead of the entire story being about them going back and forth about it, they are distracted by this wonderful mystery that allows them to develop their feelings naturally. By the time the story ended, I was so pleased to see Margie a much stronger woman than she was at the beginning and more independent. Chris wasn’t so tied to his work and learned to balance his life. I am a sucker for a story where the characters actually grow as people and not just as lovers. This is a sweet love story that I enjoyed very much.
