It has been five years since seventy-year-old Loretta Willis buried her husband and decided to remain single, only entertaining the company of family and friends. She enjoys hosting parties at her house in Lakeview, New Orleans, especially during the holidays. The festive season has arrived, and she is busy with Christmas preparations. Loretta’s only daughter, Liza, along with her husband, David, and daughter, Maya, is at her house helping, as has been their tradition. As she does every other year, Liza is still badgering her mother to try dating, given her beauty, fitness, and youthful appearance, but Loretta declines. When Liza and Maya secretly sign her up on an online dating site to find her a New Year’s Eve date, she reluctantly agrees to their idea. Can the proud, independent widow find a date? Find out in Surprise…Swipe Right: A Big Easy Holiday Comedy by Rhonda M. Lawson.
If you are looking for a comedy romance novel flavored with drama and suspense, Surprise…Swipe Right by Rhonda M. Lawson is a must-read. I could tell that Rhonda is a seasoned and tremendously gifted author right from the story’s introduction. The intimate prose featured vivid imagery, lively conversations, and witty introspective commentary. It felt like I was watching a Hollywood holiday romcom starring Jennifer Lewis as Loretta. Between following Loretta’s newfound interest in the dating app, her interactions with her dates, and her family's reaction to it, I enjoyed the banter and dramatic flair that accompanied the scenes. I could not stop laughing at the chemistry between Loretta and Charles. Love brings out the childishness in everyone, and older people are no exception. Rhonda also teaches readers about black history in the story, showing the different lives the three generations of Loretta’s family have lived and how far they have all come. I loved this page-turner.
