Suspended in the Stars by E.A. Hendryx is the first book in the Xerus Galaxy Saga. Talie never could have predicted that her time as the Soaring Staress working aboard a circus spaceship would be what keeps her secrets safe. But when she encounters a rogue soldier, she finds that safety is threatened. Meanwhile, Renner is a soldier who is keeping his own secret which connects to the assassination of a political figure and could capture the attention of the entire Xerus Galaxy. The two quickly form an unexpected connection that will leave them questioning everything and when Renner is discovered, Talie faces a difficult decision. Staying a step ahead of dangerous forces proves more difficult than either think and they have only one option if they are to survive -- which is to seek out a resistance group.
Suspended in the Stars is character-driven with alternating perspectives that allow you to see both Renner and Talie’s journey through their eyes. This creates the ideal structure for a romance as it lets you explore each character as an individual and this draws you into their relationship. The chemistry between them is enjoyable as they have an interesting meet-cute that sets up a blend of romantic comedy and action science fiction. The setting provides an engaging backdrop for the adventure to unfold with elements that Hendryx utilizes to immerse you into the world. Enter the Polis Galaxy for a non-stop journey where you can encounter soldiers, creatures, and danger that will keep you guessing until the end. This serves as an excellent foray into this series as it thoroughly introduces the characters and the setting. Hendryx places a unique spin on the YA science fiction genre to create something original.
E.A. Hendryx mixes performances and showmanship with science fiction. Renner and Talie’s journey is balanced by the secrets that each is harboring which also works as a way to bring them together. Each has a journey ahead of them that brings them to a crossroads where they must decide what the right thing to do is. Talie has a fascinating role in the world as she works on a circus spaceship which allows you to see elements of her personality with moments where she’s sassy, funny, headstrong, and compassionate. Suspended in the Stars is a charming, unique, and humorous tale of adventure that blends performance, science fiction, and romance.
