Most non-profits fail within the first five years due to financial decline, operational collapse, lack of leadership, legal troubles, etc. According to Ryan Dewey Smith, you have to be a pragmatic optimist to run a non-profit organization. Smith is the founding chairman and CEO of the non-profit holding company, Imperium. In this book, he lays out the blueprint of Imperium's growth model. You will see how non-profit organizations can achieve financial stability and make a social impact without having to compromise their primary objectives and fundamental values. Sustaining the Mission offers strategies for expansion, navigating legal hurdles, overcoming unexpected crises, measuring success by mission impact, and more. You will also learn about building the infrastructure for growth, learning lessons from failure, and adapting to crises to reach stabilization and beyond.

One of the best things about Sustaining the Mission is that, unlike most other self-help business guides, this book takes readers through the entire fundamental framework step by step. This is because Ryan Dewey Smith shares personal anecdotes about his experiences in founding and building his very own company, Imperium. You will discover all types of challenges that come with growth, expansion, and scaling of a business in this book, and it will help you acquire the essential knowledge for pursuing sustained growth of your own non-profit organization. Smith explains every topic and experience in depth, and as it's complemented by his accessible writing style, the book is both informative and engaging. All in all, I think it's an illuminative guide that I highly recommend to anyone seeking to build a major non-profit organization.
