Promising tennis amateur, student, and philosophy enthusiast Nathan Tran tells his story with this illuminating memoir. Synopsis follows Nathan's life from childhood to his experiences as a young adult as he struggles to find his place in the world. As the son of Vietnamese immigrants in California, Nathan was determined to fulfill his dreams of being a professional tennis player. However, he had to navigate severe mental health and behavioral issues. Whether bullied in elementary school, voted out of his high school LQ tennis team, or being rejected by his love interests, various unforeseen events impacted his life, leading to stress, anxiety, depression, and multiple suicide attempts. He was drawn to nihilist philosophy and continues to question if people are inherently selfish and if there is any point in life.

Synopsis is not for everyone, but readers interested in exploring the darker aspects of the human experience will find a lot to appreciate in this book. Nathan Tran gives an unflinching account of his life. The author never shies away from sharing his regrets and mistakes, as well as some thought-provoking philosophy that, at times, I found surprisingly profound. This memoir tackles some serious topics, such as suicide, mental illness, and stalking. However, Nathan's perspective on these issues is what makes this memoir such an engaging read. The author uses a utilitarian prose style to tell his life story and keeps the narrative short and crisp. Books like this help bring mental health awareness to the general populace. If you're struggling with some of these issues or know a loved one who is, definitely grab a copy!
