Tabula Rasa by Paul L. Centeno is a fast-paced epic fantasy with a powerful plot and a great antihero that will keep your mind occupied for days. Ordulis Cavo was a convict incarcerated for his war crimes. However, when a wicked sorceress starts looking for the Anima (an arcane energy with unimaginable power), Ordulis becomes the only hope for his people. The Anima called out to Cavo to help the people and fight off the sorceress before it was too late. Ordulis formed a ragtag group with the hopes of stopping the sorceress. But what Ordulis didn’t anticipate was that he would have to fight against his very nature and become the hero he never was. Was redemption possible for him? Can a war criminal change his ways when a tempting ancient power calls to him?

I love a well-written antihero, and Ordulis Cavo was everything I wished for. He was brash, sarcastic, rude at times, and very jaded. Yet despite all that, he wasn’t a hard character to love. He was the perfect example of a man who was forced to do something against his very being. The world-building was great, the suspense and mystery elements were fantastic, and the fast pace of the narrative complemented every aspect of the story. There was never a dull moment, from the moment we were first introduced to Ordulis until the final chapter; it was a treat! Author Paul L. Centeno divided the story into four parts, and each part revealed something more exciting than the last. I was excited but sad to reach the epilogue and was hoping for more. Ordulis’s redemption arc was great, and the ending was powerful. I hope there is a sequel!
