Versed In Murder by Jo A. Hiestand follows Michael McLaren, a former police detective turned reluctant investigator, who is asked to reopen the case of Dylan Ingram. Dylan was a fiddler from the promising bluegrass band Moorland Grass and was murdered a year earlier. The band, once on the brink of stardom, has been left fractured by Dylan’s death. As Michael digs into the past, he uncovers buried resentments, clashing ambitions, and tension that never ended. With bandmates, family, and even strangers hiding pieces of the truth, the case grows more dangerous when a mysterious black car begins shadowing Michael. Can Michael find the truth before it is too late?
Perfect in every sense of the word, Versed in Murder by Jo A. Hiestand was everything I wished it would be and more. I loved the narrative style. It was immersive and made me feel like I was part of the story. Michael’s character is incredibly well-written. I found him fascinating, relatable, and very entertaining. He was calculating, ready to take action, and had a go-getter personality. The mystery behind Dylan’s death, as well as the relationship of the bandmates, made the story even more interesting for me. The plot is intriguing, the pace of the narrative is just right, and I enjoyed the twists and turns. The mystery was fun, the execution of it was perfect, and there was never a dull moment. Each chapter made the story more exciting and made me read on until the end. I will look for the remaining Michael McLaren Mystery novels because I am now hooked. Highly recommended!
