Donkey-Donk is a miniature donkey who loves to go on adventures. He’s decided he wants to hike up Mount Washington. Not an easy trek, to be sure. And definitely one that requires a high level of physical fitness. So, no more popcorn, and lots more weight training and treadmill exercises. Donkey-Donk finally realizes he’s ready for his hike and records his journey in both words and pictures, from the different conditions on the trail to the weather station at the top, the quickly changing weather conditions and the interesting birds and wildlife he encounters on his journey.
Ellen F. Feld’s children’s picture book story, Take a Hike! A Donkey-Donk Story, is a pleasant little tale, as much an adventure as it is a journey of discovery. The author has provided incredible photographs to document Donkey-Donk’s journey, both before and during the ascent. There are interesting details about hiking and fascinating tidbits about Mount Washington, including the weather station at the top: “Did you know that the highest wind ever observed was recorded right here at Mount Washington?” The important message Donkey-Donk shares is that a journey anywhere is more than just getting from point A to point B. It requires stamina, training and a sense of determination. It also is an adventure in discovery, seeing and learning as you go along. And, the accomplishment is heartfelt. Even Donkey-Donk was pleased with his accomplishment and proudly displayed the t-shirt he earned from climbing Mount Washington. A fascinating little book of discovery.
