A truly great summer read, Take a Piece of My Heart by author Diane Rose Duffy is a wonderful book that will have you hooked from the start. It follows the story of Kara Salinger, later to become Kara Morino, from a youthful bride at 19 to the present day, when she is 32 years old and realizes what a mistake she has made. Kara married her husband Danny against all of the objections of her family. Danny, the classic bad-boy, had Kara’s heart from the get-go, and she wasn’t willing to let the concerns of those who loved her get in the way of what her heart (and hormones) wanted. It didn’t take her long to find out just how right her family was, but by that time, it was too late.
In many ways, this book is the story of redemption. Kara’s youthful mistake has led her into a life she could not have imagined, and dreaming of so much more. In college, I worked for a time at a shelter for victims of domestic violence, and many of the scenarios in this book rang very true for those who have experienced a violent relationship and the struggle to free oneself from this. Diane Rose Duffy’s writing style is engaging and articulate. At times, you will find yourself giggling out loud at Kara’s thoughts and actions, and in the very next minute, your heart will ache for her. This book will appeal to any reader who enjoys romances, stories of redemption and recovery from abuse, or those who just like a good story. I very much enjoyed Take a Piece of My Heart and am looking forward to seeing what Diane Rose Duffy has in store for us next.
