Talent by B. Lynn Goodwin is a young adult novel that revolves around Sandee Mason. Sandee was a student at San Ramos High and belonged to the drama club. Unfortunately, she was almost invisible because no one saw her, not her parents or schoolmates. Everyone thought of her as Brian’s little sister, the stellar student and hero who went missing in Afghanistan. Sandee was desperate to step out of her brother’s shadow and get famous by herself. The perfect opportunity came when her school began auditions for the spring production of Oklahoma. All Sandee wanted was to land a spot in the play so that everyone would know how talented she was. But fate had other plans that didn’t include what she wanted. Will the world ever see Sandee’s talent?

Talent by B. Lynn Goodwin is a fantastic novel for young adults, teachers, and guardians. It addressed social issues, grief, youthful exuberance, and self-esteem in the most enlightening yet thoughtful manner. Goodwin created such memorable characters, especially Sandee, whose life centered on loss and the need for acceptance. She loved her brother but was resentful of being in his shadow, which looked selfish. I loved her and how she handled matters! Nicole was another favorite character that took charge of her life, focusing on what mattered. Nature cut Jenn and Rob from the same cloth and they annoyed me to no end. Goodwin is a gifted storyteller who spun a refreshing tale with a brilliant plot and stylish writing. In the end, our gifts will bring us into the spotlight when we least expect them.
