In Tattered Hearts and Hopeful Souls by Leanne Davidson, readers are invited into a woman’s deeply intimate story after her son’s devastating death. Structured as a 30-day devotional, the book explores topics such as loneliness, remorse, and renewal, along with Scripture, heartfelt prayers, and original poetry. Davidson frames every struggle with honesty and hope, as seen when she writes, “The journey of grief can be a spiritual battlefield, so let’s take up the armor of God and protect ourselves with his power, comfort, and love.” Through calm scenes of nature and simple, genuine moments, this devotional invites the audience to pause, reflect, and find solace in the words and prayers that fill each day.

Tattered Hearts and Hopeful Souls by Leanne Davidson is a really moving devotional. After reading her thoughts, I felt like I knew her personally. She’s not preachy, yet she also doesn’t sugarcoat the most difficult parts of loss. What really struck me was her ability to see light in places where most people would only see darkness. I think more often than not, people let their despair consume them because it’s easier. Being okay, or even happy, requires work. I also thought that her insights and experiences were very similar to Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' stages of grief. Those stages range from denial and guilt to acceptance. In one instance, she says, “It is not uncommon to feel guilt or regret for things we perceive we should or shouldn’t have said or done.” The pace felt gentle yet still engaging. Her message is easy to understand but powerful—healing takes time, but it’s possible, and hope can always be found, even in life’s hardest moments.
