Thank the Chef: A Story to Inspire Mealtime Gratitude is a children’s picture book written by Melissa Sue Walker and illustrated by Winda Mulyasari. Margo loves it when her family gives sandwich parties. The best part of a sandwich party is that each person can make their sandwich exactly the way they like it. Margo likes to make her sandwiches really tall -- just like her dad. When she makes him a sandwich, he’ll thoughtfully take a bite -- and then his eyes open wide and he exclaims how wonderful it is. Margo’s mom and dad usually make the family’s dinners. Often, the meals they make are things Margo is familiar with and enjoys eating, but last night Dad came up with something new and different. Margo didn’t want to hurt her dad’s feelings but she really didn’t want to try it. When her dad uttered a heart-wrenching moan at her refusal, Margo decided, maybe, just maybe, she should give it a try.

Thank the Chef follows Margo as she shares her culinary skills in making sandwiches and her efforts to try something new that her dad created. Most kids are a little bit leery of something new or different-looking -- and Margo is no exception. Her dad’s dramatic response to her “no thanks” persuades her to expand her comfort zone and take a taste. Melissa Sue Walker’s story may get even the most finicky kids to give something new a try. The description of how Margo chews a small bite carefully to try to identify familiar flavors gives kids cues on how to try their own parents’ creations. Trying a little bite sometimes makes a world of difference. Walker also includes discussion questions that can keep the dialogue going after storytime is over. Winda Mulyasari’s upbeat and colorful illustrations do a grand job of giving this story zing and enthusiasm. Thank the Chef: A Story to Inspire Mealtime Gratitude is highly recommended.
