Thankful is a heartwarming children’s picture book written by Lou Recupero and featuring illustrations by Emily Recupero. The story follows Salvatore and Louis, two young bear cubs who want to learn the meaning of the word 'thankful.' Salvatore learns about the word at school and is given an assignment regarding it, but he does not quite understand its meaning or how to use it. He asks his mother, Mama Bear, and his little brother, Louis, for help. Louis mistakenly thinks the word is 'tankful,' but their mother clarifies and provides examples of things they can be thankful for every day. Their father, Papa Bear, joins the conversation and shares his thoughts, expressing gratitude for the time spent with his family. As Salvatore begins to grasp the meaning of thankful, he comes up with a creative idea for his assignment to show his appreciation for his family.
Thankful is a delightful story with an important message about the significance of family and being grateful for the cherished moments and relationships in our lives. Parents and children will connect with this tale due to its relatable plot and lovable characters. Children will empathize with Salvatore's struggle to understand a new word, while parents will appreciate the gentle guidance from Mama Bear and Papa Bear, highlighting the importance of open communication and family bonding. This narrative beautifully captures the essence of being thankful—being there for one another, lending a helping hand, and creating special memories together. I love that this story was written and illustrated by a couple for their children, as it adds a personal touch and resonates deeply with the theme of family connection and bonding. Lou Recupero effectively conveys the message through simple language and humor, making the story engaging. Emily's illustrations add vibrant color and perfectly capture the characters’ emotions. Overall, this is a must-have for anyone who wants to teach their children about the meaning of thankfulness and what they should appreciate in their lives.
