The 2099: Echoes of a World Remembered by B. Zamanian is a well-written book that offers readers a glimpse into how the future could be impacted by today’s compromises regarding artificial intelligence, technological advancement, and the Internet. Kairon's victory after the 2099 election marks a significant social and technological catastrophe, including an information war that would lead to devastating consequences for the future of Konkordia, the name for what was once the United States. This means that tools such as mobile phones, computers, and smart home gadgets, originally designed to make life easier, will now be transformed into ruthless systems of control. However, Philip is aware of Kairon's lies and crimes as he discovers a nuclear plant that produces radioactive waste, which is being dumped into the ocean under Kairon's government. Philip is determined to fight and bring the truth to light.
Although the story is fictional, it exposed a reality prevalent in our society. This book gave me some time to reflect on the impact of artificial intelligence and robotics on human social relationships, family life, and culture if not properly regulated. The writing is concise, organized, well-paced, straightforward, and easy to comprehend. I was impressed that this book did not entirely condemn the impact of advancements in artificial intelligence and technology; instead, it provided insight into how they could be used as weapons in the wrong hands. The characters in the story are well-developed, which kept the narrative engaging. I recommend The 2099 by B. Zamanian to all lovers of science fiction and readers fascinated by artificial intelligence.
