Sometimes we’re too hard on ourselves and it makes us feel grumpy and unhappy. That’s what’s happened to Gus. In Cathy Studer’s The Adventures of Gus and Pasha, the first book, Gus Finds His Smile, addresses self-awareness and self-respect; in other words, feeling good about oneself. In the second book, Jada Stops Hiding, the characters are faced with bullies and have to learn how to deal with them. It’s all about self-resilience and, once again, feeling good about oneself. Each of the six books addresses key issues young people face daily. Mental health is a key buzzword, something that we all must confront from time to time. With the proper tools in place, young people can face the problems of their world head-on.

Cathy Studer’s library of books, The Adventures of Gus and Pasha, is a six-book series that guides children to a happy and resilient mindset. Each of the six books focuses on a key issue: bullying, self-acceptance, self-respect, and so much more. Each book is a story with an inner message to help young readers navigate the difficult world around them. The language is simple so young readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful and help move the story forward. At the end of each book is a useful resource for guardians and teachers to help adults help their young people. The appendix summarizes the key points presented in the stories and offers suggestions for activities that adults and young people can do collaboratively together. An excellent resource.
