The Adventures of Henry the Hedgehog is a children’s series written by Dr. Renea Skelton. The Harvest Moon Festival at Big Rock follows Henry and his friend Patrick the Porcupine who are heading to Big Rock. Henry always looks forward to the Harvest Moon Festival and says what he is thankful for under the big bright moon. He meets a sad bunny named Roxy. Roxy is grieving her mother bunny who died. After talking about her mixed feelings, she learns that this is called grief. She eventually experiences wholehearted gratitude. At the end of the book, Dr. Renea explains common signs of grief and helpful tidbits on how to cope with loss. She encourages all to move toward acceptance. The inclusion of animal facts and information about the Harvest Moon adds an element of fun and general knowledge to the story.

The Harvest Moon Festival at Big Rock is such a compassionate story. Dr. Renea Skelton gently introduces the concept of grief and complex emotions to children. The narrative balances the festive atmosphere of the Harvest Moon celebration with the poignant theme of coping with sadness, ultimately guiding readers toward understanding, acceptance, and gratitude. Children are taught that it’s okay to cry and grieve and permit themselves to feel. I was deeply touched when reading this story as I have grieved both my parents at a young age. I highly recommend this book to any child or adult who has lost a loved one. The Harvest Moon Festival at Big Rock not only validates children's emotions but also teaches empathy and the importance of listening to others in pain.
