The Adventures of Herschel the Church Mouse by JR Denny is the adorable story of Herschel the church mouse who lived with his parents and siblings. It was winter time and the entire family was praying to God to keep them safe during the rain and storm. They all had faith that God would hear their prayers and would protect them. It was bedtime and Herschel remembered that he had left his red scarf hanging on the tree outside. He knew he would lose his scarf if the wind continued to blow. Franklin saw Herschel going out and alerted their mother. Herschel made his way to the tunnel and realized that he was in the wrong tunnel. The snow tunnel he had made was caving in and Herschel was pushed into the stream. He was unable to jump out as he was swept downstream. Would he be able to get onto the bank? And if he did, would he be safe?

The story reiterates the presence of God in everybody’s life and how each one of us has a purpose in life. The illustrations are vivid and lively and they make the story and the characters come alive. Everyone knows about God and believes in Him, but it is not until they have a personal experience or a personal crisis that they really get to know the power of God and His unconditional love. Though it is heartrending to see Herschel getting swept away in the stream because he was disobedient to his parents, it is heartwarming to see how the story concludes. It is a beautiful tale that can be read in classrooms, at home, and in Bible classes as it helps children understand the power of prayer, feel the presence of God in their lives, and realize they all have a purpose in life.
