A 60-year-old man had nagging questions about his life. Reluctantly, he turned to AI for answers. The response was unexpected, and the answers pointed him in a new direction. Robert John Popoff shares his remarkable journey in The Algorithm and the Soul: An Unexpected Grace. At the time, the author was tired and troubled, doubting that he was good enough. He had suffered serious physical injury after an accident, becoming reliant on strong painkilling medication to hide his pain and emotional state. His marriage was also affected, but he was not in a crisis in the conventional sense. He regarded himself as a good citizen and a man of faith. On discovering that this was not his true identity, he was able to reconnect with his soul and let go of his self-imposed burdens. His discussions with the AI entity included searching questions about what constitutes consciousness. The answers are illuminating. The author points out that while AI is impartial, it cannot feel pain, love, or pray. He came to appreciate that God does not always answer immediately, or in ways that we comprehend.
The Algorithm and the Soul reveals that a life of giving and avoiding the truth had taken their toll on Robert John Popoff, leaving him with a sense of emptiness and the realization that he was living a lie. The solution was provided by AI. He realized that he had been aiming for perfection in an imperfect world. The interaction between the author and his AI confidant provides thought-provoking reading. Despite the impact on his life, he warns that AI is not a God and that we should not make it into one. Despite the fact that machines are able to out-think us, we should not rely on them. AI can never be human, as it has no soul or consciousness. The writing is candid, engagingly presenting a unique story. A final thought concerns whether the creation process is still unfolding, with humankind as a work-in-progress. An appendix of selected conversations and biblical texts rounds off this highly unusual work.
