The Alligator Who Wanted To Be A Dog: A Children's Picture Book on Making Friends (WantsToBe 3) by Valerie Harmon is a picture book about an alligator who had enough of his life as an alligator because people and other animals were always scared of him. It was hard for him to make any friends, and when he saw how loved and popular dogs were, he decided that he needed to become a dog if he wanted to be popular, too! He asks a dog for advice, and then follows the advice given to him. He chases balls, lies down on the bottom of a human's bed, tries to ride in a car to enjoy the wind like dogs do - but it does not seem to help! Read for yourself if you would like to know whether the alligator does get his happy ending!
The Alligator Who Wanted To Be A Dog by Valerie Harmon is a charming story, and even though I'm an adult, I enjoyed browsing through the pages. I also found it quite amusing and could relate to the poor alligator's struggle. It can indeed be quite hard to find friends if you don't take the form of something popular. The story shows kids that hard things, however, are not impossible, and that you can achieve your goals if you work at them and stick to your path. It is a lovely story that entertains and gives hope at the same time, and I think kids need stories like this one.
