Katie hates her job in Athens and, more specifically, she hates her boss Roula. After being sacked from the job, she wonders what life has in store for her. A seemingly random encounter with a gypsy woman cheers her up and fills her with hope. Armed with the gift of an amulet from her new acquaintance, she sets off to the Isle of Stifos to begin her new job at an island hotel. She then meets Aggelos, a vision of all things beautiful, on the way to the island and spills juice on his shirt. Imagining she will never see him again, she puts the incident behind her. At the hotel, she meets the owners and is made to feel welcome by Spiros but feels a reluctance from his wife Matina. The Amulet by Effrosyni Moschoudi charts Katie's magical summer and the array of characters that makes it magical. Aggelos, Elise and Babis become great friends to Katie, but can she find the happiness she seeks with her handsome new friend?
What a stunning read! You can feel the summer heat and taste the sumptuous Greek dishes as the words just leap from the page. Effrosyni Moschoudi’s love of Greece and its many treasures is evident in The Amulet. I loved the strong female characters. Mrs. Sparks, Matina, Katie, and Elise are such strong women and Chloe, the little girl who loves moussaka, is charming. There are humor and pathos alongside love and sadness, and you will love the story of the smelly angel with dreadful eating habits! I loved this book and look forward to visiting Greece again in the pages of another novel by this author.
