The Ark Angel by Matt Stewart revolves around Christian Hagio, a man chosen by God for a divine mission after being saved from near-death experiences by his guardian angel, Mike. When Christian and his wife, Anna, face an unimaginable tragedy, Christian is told of his role in recovering the Ark of the Covenant, which is integral to a plan to save humanity. As he sets off on his mission with Mike's guidance, he lands in Jordan, where a confrontation with Lucifer runs in tandem with the discovery of divine powers through the Ark’s relics. Christian's life intensifies when he uses his newfound powers to influence global events, including a request for intervention in a nuclear war. Regret settles in as his earthly challenges further test his faith, beliefs, and sense of responsibility, leading to a climactic swarm with a cataclysmic impact.

The Ark Angel by Matt Stewart is a Christian supernatural story about the unexpected consequences of gaining immense power and the public attention that comes with it. The writing style is simple, direct, and clear. Christian Hagios is a flawed protagonist who, like most, does not come across as worthy of the mission, even to me as a reader. This resolves itself quickly and I really like that it is his very humanity that makes him likeable. The standout character is his wife, Anna, who Stewart adeptly makes into a grounding figure and a woman that I wanted to root for. The pacing works well, moving ahead at a clipping speed but still miraculously not feeling rushed. I appreciate that the conversations are not heavy-handed or preachy. Overall, The Ark Angel offers a fresh look at how power can shape a person’s life and the difficulties of balancing good intentions with the will of God and our responsibilities to respect that.
