Set in 1962 Venice, The Art Collector's Wife is a crime drama by Susan Knecht. All Isabel Lesser wants is to leave Venice and pursue her dreams in Paris. Raised by her strict nonna, Lila, Isabel rebels by going out of her way to skip school and commit petty thefts. Apart from her friend Antonia, Isabel is close to a boy in her class named Nicolo. However, when Nicolo's father, Signor Gritti, discovers the secret treasure of valuable Renaissance-era paintings that Isabel's grandmother Lila possesses, he hatches a sinister plan to kidnap Isabel, using her as leverage to demand the paintings from Lila as ransom. Meanwhile, Antonia chases Isabel's trail to Paris. Will Lila be able to rescue Isabel and her friend from the clutches of these dangerous criminals?
The Art Collector's Wife is a gripping tale of family, betrayal, and inheritance. Author Susan Knecht's powerful narrative will engross both crime fans and readers of historical fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Isabel is a fascinating character. Knecht masterfully portrays teenage loneliness and rebellion through Isabel. Whether it's Isabel's relationship with Lila, her friendship with Antonia, or her romance with Nicolo, all the relationship dynamics feel layered, complex, and very realistic. The plot is paced well and has a few surprises in store for readers. You don't know how the story will end. The stakes get higher and higher, and you can't help but sympathize with the plight of your favorite characters. The ending seemed fitting. It suits the tone of the narrative, leaving a couple of threads ambiguous. Overall, it's a great story and I highly recommend it.
