The Best Kept Secret by Wendi Nunnery is a young adult coming of age story that is full of deep emotions and secrets. The story follows the trials and tribulations of Emma Fraser, a fifteen-year-old high school sophomore. This story deals with the angst of high school. In her sophomore year, Emma discovers the ultimate betrayal: that she never really knew anything about her friends. Her best friend, Andy, is no longer a virgin, making Emma feel like she is the only one left alive. So when Deegan Burke, a rich and handsome senior, invites Emma to the prom, she feels like her year has turned around for the better. But just before she can start celebrating, her life begins to unravel even more. And when innocent secrets start to become darker and more dangerous, Emma realizes that a friend is a friend for life and some secrets should never be kept.

The Best Kept Secret is a well written story that covers the gamut from keeping secrets to teenage rebellion. It talks about young love and the decision of staying a virgin or going all the way with someone you may or may not care about. It even touches on the social issues of bullying and suicide. It is dark and emotional, but also beautiful and inspiring. Emma's journey through life's experiences cover a mixture of being naïve, innocent, insecure, fragile, experiencing ignorance and pain, followed by being confident, strong, mature, hopeful, and eventually full of love.
