The Best New True Crime Stories: Well-Mannered Crooks, Rogues and Criminals, edited by Mitzi Szereto, is about actual crimes. The stories are brilliant because they are brazen, colorful, and audacious. It is about intelligent but often lucky individuals who know how to take advantage of the system. They risked their lives and those of others. The stories describe their tactics and behavior and the victims that they choose to bear the brunt of their fraudulent schemes. They had innate or learned mannerisms to manipulate situations to their advantage and for their financial gain. They all dared to perform some outlandishly creative crimes. They all followed their selfish desires that were way more important than fear of the law. Many of them gained notoriety locally, and some became infamous internationally.

The Best New True Crime Stories, edited by Mitzi Szereto, is a fun ride that puts an entertaining spin on true crime. The drama, the action, and the exploitation that these well-mannered criminals get themselves embroiled in is astounding. Another staggering observation is how these rogues are from such diverse backgrounds. It was astonishing to find cases of infamous men and women criminals from various nationalities. Each story has its crazy crook that captivates from start to end. My favorite stories were The Bombay Godmother by Shashi Kadapa and A One-Way Ticket to Poyais by Janel Comeau. The latter probably attests to the funniest albeit twisted examples of deception by a con artist. This compilation of crime stories might even become the inspiration for some movies.
