In Simon Cantan’s The Bite of Death (Bytarend, Book 3), Tondbert’s past comes back to haunt him. The one who killed his father, now known as King Brandon Barke, has sent a deadly assassin, Murder Queen Lila Deadwhisper, to kill him. King Brandon even has a cruel condition; he wants Tondbert to die unarmed and on his knees, willingly. With his mother and sister as hostages, Tondbert doesn’t seem to have any other option. However, his friends have a plan and won’t let Tondbert die that easily.

The beauty of this series is the evident continuous development of the plot, characters and the world-building. Bytarend is no longer the dead town that Tondbert and Osric first set foot in. More people are coming, making the city guards busier than ever to accommodate them, while dealing with the danger that still lurks around. I find Isabelle’s growing friendship with Dainty Face endearing. It’s also enjoyable to revisit some of the characters from Book 1 – like Captain Swidhelm – as Osric and his group must escape from Wikeadward city to continue their quest of saving Tondbert, his mother and sister.

It’s fun to read about the relationship growth between the characters and the new challenges that they have to face. I care for them as if they were my own friends. Also, Lila Deadwhisper is an exciting new character and I can’t wait to read more of her story. It makes me more invested in the series’ trademark humor, the daily mayhem and adventure. The Bite of Death is another great installment in the Bytarend saga. It’s increasingly becoming more impressive as a literary work and my mind is already set on Book 4.
