Murder Queen Lila Deadwhisper, the deadliest assassin in the world, is the focus in Simon Cantan’s fifth installment in the Bytarend series, The Bite of Rust. We follow her beginnings, how she started her journey to become an elite Murder Queen. Four-year-old Lila is sent to The Fortress of Rust along with other orphan girls. Despite being scared for her life, little Lila shows admirable perseverance, bravery, and compassion. She took a punishment for Bethany, who became her first friend, during her first training in the fortress. However, Lila has a bitter rival and bully named Doll. Together with her gang, Doll made Lila and the other girls’ time at the fortress as hellish as she could.

The orphan girls learn reading, mathematics, acrobatics and the art of combat. They are provided with meals, dorm rooms, a library and whatnot. An elite academy for girls, but with much a harsher learning environment, with the main objective of graduating as excellent killers – that is what The Fortress of Rust is all about. I admired Lila’s leadership and strategic skills when their next learning phase comes – eliminating all the other girls until one ascends to the top as the new Murder Queen.

The Bite of Rust deviates from the light-hearted adventure trademark of the Bytarend series. Despite the different tone, I had expected the change since it’s about Lila and the Murder Queens. Gory deaths are inevitable. Like the previous books, I enjoyed the story. That said, I hope Book 6 will return to the light-hearted nature of the series.
