The Blue Garou is a police procedural mystery written by H. Max Hiller. Cooter Holland is a police officer assigned to the Louisiana State Highway Patrol, but on an informal loan arrangement with the New Orleans Police Department. While he was born and raised in New Orleans, Cooter spent much of his youth in military boarding school and most of his adult life seeing action in the Middle East. His father, a retired New Orleans Chief of Detectives, disappeared during search efforts, and Cooter's sister had extracted a hospital bedside promise from the injured veteran that he'd return to New Orleans and solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. The current Chief of Detectives, Bill Avery, has other plans for Cooter. Biggie Charles Lynley, former gangster and convicted murderer turned music promoter, has been found dead in his car and his murderer, a pit bull dyed blue and packaged as a birthday gift, is in the car with his body. Everyone's first instinct is to shoot the dog, but Cooter's sister has other ideas.
H. Max Hiller's Louisiana police procedural, The Blue Garou, will have many readers fantasizing about New Orleans vacations after reading this entertaining story where most business matters are handled during breakfast, lunch or dinner. Hiller’s detective, Cooter, is complicated and still very much a product of his violent military past, yet his forbearance in dealing with the blood-stained and obviously guilty canine had me thinking that perhaps this detective is worth getting to know a bit better. This story also stars the devastated city and shares with the reader the author’s dismay at the inequitable ways in which Katrina's victims were treated. His plot is as complex and complicated as his main character is, and that's a good thing for this intelligent and multi-faceted mystery. The Blue Garou is an unpredictable and thought-provoking mystery that will keep readers guessing till the very end. It's highly recommended.
