The Boy with Words by C.E. Wilson is a two-part novel written in a blend of fantasy and reality. Her tone is light, but the meaning underneath the surface goes so much deeper than what you’d expect. White Frost lives a seemingly average and dull life. She has a routine where she goes to class, eats at the dining hall, and waits for her cousin to come home. Her cousin has the life she wants. As a chosen one, she gets to go to the Unknown and brings back scraps of paper with words she’s never heard of. Rain, Moon, Stars, Blue Skies. Words so strange she doesn’t quite believe they’re real. When tragedy strikes, she decides to risk going to the Unknown to discover the meaning behind the words. Everything about the Unknown is more than she imagined and everything about her home changes.
C.E. Wilson sets up a world that she flips on its head when the Unknown is revealed. The Boy with Words explores perspectives of life in a deep and rich story. Wilson shows how our perception of words defines our view of life. We know rain, therefore we understand. White doesn’t know rain. Her world isn’t like ours. Wilson’s style is easy-going and keeps you invested with every page. I couldn’t put it down until I knew how it ended! It makes you think deeper about how we as people relate to language. We know what we’re taught, but when you cross cultures you learn a new set of words that redefines the world you see. The Boy with Words is unique, crafty, and a delight! It can be serious and funny, heartbreaking and heartwarming. It’s the perfect blend of emotion and heart.
