The Chosen is the first book of Into the Chambers series by Jenay G Sherman that brings together three young women from diverse backgrounds during a turning point in their lives. Sera, Kari, and Gwen anticipated the first day of college to be a dramatic change, but they weren't expecting to develop supernatural gifts. When an intriguing professor seems to know way too much about their situation, they have no choice but to investigate further, only to discover that an ancient genie is after their powers, which are intensifying now that the three of them are together. They must come together as a sisterhood to find a way to stop the genie and reunite their supernatural family.
Switching perspectives between the three main characters, Sera, Kari, and Gwen, The Chosen tells various complex stories that weave together and eventually merge into one smooth tale of magic and prophecy. Jenay G Sherman has assembled a unique cast of characters with different personalities and backgrounds and gives each girl her distinct voice. The antagonist, as portrayed by the genie, also gets a few moments in the spotlight, and he is presented as a unique character that is fun to read and despise. With each girl's story revealing more and more of the mysteries of their lives, this book flies by, and I found myself incredibly sad that it was over so soon. I can't wait for the next installment of the series to learn what other adventures await these three girls and their new powers.
