The Counselor's Daughter by Claire Pence is about the value of promises, loyalty, and the power of an unexpected friendship. At first, Emma reluctantly accepts her mother's request to befriend Mary Ann. Her best friend, Scarlett, is also unconvinced because of the less popular girl's unkempt appearance. However, they soon discover that Mary Ann is not only bullied but also hiding an injury she got at home and refuses to get help. The situation worsens when she is diagnosed with a wrist fracture, prompting the Department of Human Services (DHS) to intervene. Despite these challenges, the three girls grow close, even calling themselves the Math Musketeers. Together, they embark on a project for the school’s Math Bowl, determined to showcase their true potential.

Claire Pence has created wonderful characters. The three friends, with different but complementary personalities, share good intentions and a genuine desire to help. Emma and Scarlett not only care for Mary Ann, but as a group, they also support others. One example is their relationship with Martin, a new boy with a reputation as a troublemaker, whom they don't judge, giving him a chance for a new beginning. I enjoyed the development of these characters because they have their own stories to tell. In addition, the setting is realistic, with detailed and thoughtful storytelling. The situations are seamlessly interwoven, showing the perspective of the kids and adults. Some children are close to their parents; others are distant. This diversity and depth make it easy to understand the experiences. The Counselor's Daughter invites us to reflect on our relationships and how acceptance and respect can improve them.
