Feelin' It: A College Journey of Epic Proportions by Eric V. Warren is the author's memoir of his journey from Detroit to Michigan Technological University. Raised by a single mother, he navigates a world of academic underperformance, standardized test success, and eventual college admission. Eric details the physical and emotional distance from home, recalling a cramped van ride north and the culture shock of being a Black student in a predominantly White town. At Tech, he juggles difficult courses, low-paying jobs, awkward social dynamics, and relationships, including a failed romance with Tendi, strained friendships like the one with JP, and reconnecting with Rose one summer. Amid cold winters, student deaths, and racial tensions, Eric develops his voice—literally—through rapping, gradually building confidence and reflecting on his identity, disappointments, and persistence.

In Feelin’ It by Eric V. Warren, the writing is sharp, direct, and consistently engaging, allowing the reader to experience campus life through Eric’s unique perspective. His accounts, like quitting the Campus Café after two chaotic shifts or performing at a poetry slam encouraged by friends, are told with honesty and plenty of detail, making every moment land. I love Eric’s narrative voice, not just for its confidence, but also because it is so refreshingly conversational. I genuinely felt like I was having a chat with a friend, and this is extremely important because reading memoirs about someone you do not know can be hard. The narrative flows smoothly across semesters, filled with moments that are sometimes humorous, sometimes frustrating, but consistently thoughtful. Overall, this is a pitch-perfect perspective of Eric's university experience, and it is really great.
