M.V. Grimm’s The Crimson Maiden is an engaging tale with a steady pace, filled with valuable insights and important lessons like the value of modesty and curiosity. I appreciated Arianna's humble demeanor and unwavering determination in the face of difficulty. Because of her patience and good attitude, she gained a remarkable reputation and earned some loyal friends. I was on the edge of my seat as I followed her story while she tried to unravel the mystery and the connection between the new legacy and her father’s disappearance. As I read, I came across another character I admired: Seraphus. Despite his initial stiffness, he grew into one of the most mature and developed characters in the story. It was fulfilling to witness the characters’ growth the deeper I got into it. The plot was the perfect combination of romance, fantasy, and action. The conclusion of the first book has heightened my anticipation for the upcoming sequel, leaving me eager for more. I look forward to more adventures and challenges in this fantastic series. Amazing work!

The Crimson Maiden: The Swordmasters' Legacy by M.V. Grimm begins with teen protagonist Arianna's journey to the Heincraft Academy of Swordcraft, where she meets headmaster Holden Gruelcraft and quickly bonds with some of her fellow students. Seeking answers about her father's disappearance, she uncovers her family's legacy as Swordmasters protecting Ariandor from the Dark Kingdom, which leads her to a mysterious cave, Feuer Verlies. Alongside Lina and Seraphus, Arianna comes up against demanding challenges and mythical creatures, aided by the unique being Red, who has invisibility and telepathic abilities. Their trials strengthen them individually and as a group, and they set out to explore the Fire Dungeon for clues about Arianna's father. Getting there is laden with obstacles but throughout their journey, Arianna learns valuable skills. She also learns what the word "feuerprobe” means, trial by fire, and that her quest is just beginning.

M.V. Grimm delivers all these fantastical elements and more in this first book of The Swordmasters' Legacy trilogy, The Crimson Maiden. I was drawn to the book because Arianna, nicknamed the Fiery Valkyrie, is a teenager who will, naturally, become stronger as the series continues, and as a mother, I am always looking for stories with capable, smart, and strong young women in their own right. This is important to me and I feel Grimm gave us a perfectly imperfect protagonist in Arianna. The settings are visually stunning and Grimm is excellent in depicting them and the way magic works, the Elementals being the standout. Arianna faces battles and Grimm delivers glorious beasts, from a colossal Dinoleafus to elemental companions like Breezy. Even with so much going on, Arianna attends formal balls and has relatable teen experiences. Overall, this is a solid start to what will likely be a wonderful trilogy and I look forward to seeing where it goes next.
