The Devil in the White Mountains by Mark Smeltz tells a terrifying story set in the Himalayas. Lt. Col. Grant Morrison is serving in the British Raj when he's sent to the Himalayas. A remote village is under siege by a man-eating leopard, and Morrison has the experience to deal with it. It's a superstitious area, and so he keeps his mission secret from his traveling companions. But when he speaks to the latest victim's mother, he learns details that shock him. A visit to the lama at Skyot Gompa monastery leaves him with the terrible feeling that he may not succeed in his mission. His quarry is not what it seems, and he may not even survive the night. What is he hunting? The identity of his foe will leave him shaken and terrified, but can he succeed in his mission?
If you're looking for a story that will leave you terrified, don't pass up the chance to read The Devil in the White Mountains. This short story by avid traveler Mark Smeltz tells a dark, horrifying tale that will chill you to your core. It is a quick read, but it is incredibly well-crafted. There is plenty of detail in a tight, well-paced story, but not so much detail that you can't use your imagination, something that plays an important role in a tale like this. The ending will leave you wanting to know more, but I believe it is best left as it is. I love well-written short stories, and this is a terrifying horror story but without the traditional blood and gore; a story that readers will dream about long after they've finished reading it. I look forward to reading more of Mark's stories.
