John Striker created an AI so advanced that it could be controlled by thoughts via a chip implanted in his head. Scared at how powerful it had become, he shut it down. Then, at the age of 33, as a proud atheist, John had an encounter with a Jesuit priest and, in the following 30 days, was led back to the Way. From this moment on, he dedicated his life to God and knew that the Father had missions for him. His biggest task was to introduce the Way to Ed Oberman, The Big Kahuna, a particularly vile real estate mogul located in Destin. Ed was raised a Jew and is now a staunch atheist with loads of hate for God in his heart. Meanwhile, it appears that the AI wasn’t completely shut down and now has a mind of its own. Can John lead Ed to the Way without being taken down the dark road himself? Can the AI be found and disconnected? Find out in Philip Zimmerman’s Destin.

Destin is book one of the John Striker series. The entire narrative unfolds over a period of only a few months, in which some incredible things happen. John is a powerful protagonist and one to whom the reader can’t help but be drawn. The reader needs to pay attention to every other character in this book, as they all play pivotal roles, culminating in some amazing revelations in the final two chapters. While many plotlines are resolved by the end of book one, many aren’t, and a shock ending sets up book two perfectly. Phillip Zimmerman has aimed Destin at readers of faith. There are biblical passages, a ton of prayers, and one or two miracles, while the underlying story is the importance of accepting God into your life. Christians who also enjoy a technological slant to the plot will particularly embrace this story.

In Dr. Philip Zimmerman’s Christian thriller Destin, John Striker arrives in Florida during the final stretch of a cross-country motorcycle journey tied to a promise. An accident leaves him injured before reaching Destin, forcing him to rely on Hunter Green to continue. At the shoreline, his actions draw the attention of Ed Oberman and Rebecca Weiss, putting him in a situation shaped by a violent incident involving Mike Phillips and a dispute over what occurred. As John continues toward his objective, his connection to a custom motorcycle and his work with advanced artificial intelligence systems bring increased scrutiny, placing him between competing interests tied to control of those systems. While maintaining his commitment, he becomes directly involved in decisions that affect Rebecca’s future and Ed’s response to him.

Dr. Philip Zimmerman’s Destin is a brilliant, fast-paced thriller with a lot of really, really nice cars! I love John for his grit and ability to hunker down and fight through pain and injury, but when Rebecca goes from Ferrari to Tesla and still chooses a Ford Bronco for herself? It was a toss-up who I would invite over for dinner first. The writing is sharp and cinematic, and puts readers in visual settings, the standout to me being a fortified coastal house that is a prepper's dream. It comes fully loaded to operate autonomously with corridors, enclosed courtyards, and a central pool that controls and separates those inside from the outside world. This is a Christian novel, and Zimmerman leans deeply into scripture. The characters themselves also show their faith through direct practice, including a priest in a hospital performing rites for an unconscious patient, and people turning to prayer as an intentional response to crisis. Readers who relish faith-based thrillers loaded with tech and buckets of action will find it all here. Recommended.

Destin by Dr. Philip Zimmerman is the story of John Striker, a tech billionaire whose sentient AI poses the threat of global destruction. He has arrived in Destin, Florida, as a repentant man on a mission after meeting Curtis Rabb on a ski lift at the Blue Mountain Resort. Curtis has been behind his spiritual awakening, having offered to show him the Way revealed in Jesus. John travels across the country using a customized Harley to preach the Gospel. His mission leads him to meet Ed Oberman, a rich, agnostic Jew with a strong hostility toward Christianity. John heals Ed’s friend, Mike, exorcises a demon from Ed, and dismantles Ed’s resistance to conversion. With revelations coming out, will he be able to convert Ed and neutralize his rogue AI?

Dr. Philip Zimmerman's tale reads as a modern-day Christian allegory. I enjoyed how he explores the conflict between the power of Artificial Intelligence and the liberating power of the Gospel. John’s transformation was an inspiring aspect of this book for me. He is a man who lacks nothing, a billionaire who gives up his wealth in response to the call of the Gospel to sell everything and follow Jesus. The part of self-effacement in his character is skillfully developed, and he came across as a reflection of the Way of Jesus. I enjoyed the biblical references, which give the writing an educational quality, but it was the spiritual symbolism that really captured my interest. Destin will delight Christians and readers who want to understand the key messages of the Gospel and what true conversion entails.

Destin by Philip Zimmerman introduces John Striker, a former tech billionaire, who pioneered an AI but underwent a spiritual conversion. After his conversion, John abandons his empire and follows a spiritual path that takes him off the grid, travelling to share the good news of his newfound freedom. He arrives in Destin, Florida, on a custom Harley-Davidson, where he meets a devout Air Force captain called Hunter Green and Ed Oberman. Ed is a real estate mogul with a cynical attitude. Ed is manipulative, and apart from the spiritual confrontation with Ed, John must deal with the dangers posed by his rogue AI. Follow him through his spiritual journey that involves personal transformations, healings, and miracles.

This novel brims with spiritual energy, and can be read as an allegory of the Gospels. I enjoyed the way the call of Jesus to His disciples is symbolized, and John’s decision to literally leave behind a life of comfort and riches is central to the story. I also enjoyed the aspect of spiritual warfare and how it is developed in this enthralling tale. Characterization is stellar, and John is depicted as a humble, Christ-like character who opposes worldly ambition. Supporting characters like Rebecca and Hunter are believable, and it was enjoyable following them. Philip Zimmerman is a master at creating spellbinding imagery with the setting, delivering well-drawn canvases of the Emerald Coast with the serene beauty of the Gulf beaches and luxury marinas. Destin is a modern spiritual journey that reflects biblical themes, and its gorgeous prose and incredibly developed characters make it a wonderful read for fans of Christian fiction.

Destin is the first book in the John Striker series by Dr. Philip Zimmerman. John Striker, a tech giant who has made a mark on the world of sentient AI, became a deeply devout Christian after a mysterious encounter with God. Now, after a brutal beating by a gang of squatters, John somehow manages to find his way to Destin, Florida, on his custom Harley Davidson CVO. But soon, he runs into Ed Oberman, a troubled yet influential man who is suspicious of John's intentions. Ed sends his goddaughter, Chase Breeze, to seduce John. However, Chase ends up discovering who she truly is. Meanwhile, Ed's friends, Mike and Bruce, come to terms with the man Ed has become. What's going to happen to John, Ed, and his friends?

Destin illustrates the power of faith with the wisdom of the scriptures. It's a moving tale about faith and self-discovery. Dr. Philip Zimmerman weaves an absorbing, character-driven drama that sets its hooks in you from the very first page. There is an underlying layer of mystery that keeps you invested in the plot machinations. The author places some timely twists and turns in the narrative that you never see coming. John draws his strength from his faith, dedicating himself to helping and improving the lives of others. He is a likable protagonist and very easy to root for. I also liked the complicated friendship between Ed, Bruce, and Mike. Hunter and Chase/Rebecca were interesting secondary characters, too. There's a cliffhanger toward the end that only makes you more eager to read the sequel. All in all, drama lovers are in for a treat.
