Red the Irish Setter was relaxing on the beach one day. He was enjoying the sights and smells. Sniffing the seashells and gazing at the never-ending waves of the ocean, he spots para sailors, hot air balloons, and sailboats. Everyone at the beach was having fun but him. He did have some fun chasing the seagulls, but they soon flew off. Sure the beach was nice, calm, and relaxing, but he didn't have anyone to enjoy the beautiful day with. Could a dog find a friend at the beach? Suddenly he spots something in the water. Come find out what it was!

The Dog and the Dolphin by James B. Dworkin is a delightful and charming children's pictorial book which introduces young readers to the concept of friendship. The author chose wisely when picking his two main characters. Dolphins and dogs are both fun and exciting to children. This allows for young readers to not only learn while they are reading or being read to, but to also enjoy the excitement and relate to the characters better. The artwork by Michael Chelich is fabulously created with bright and captivating colors that will keep a child's attention and enhance their imagination. The book is not only for young readers, but many adults and teens may enjoy this too. Your mind will fill with memories of a nice day on vacation or a special friendship as each page is turned.

Reading this to my three-year-old daughter has brought her hours of joy and pure innocent excitement as she turned each page and described what each picture showed - squealing when seeing the dolphin and dog playing together, and screaming when viewing a "mean" shark and sea monster in the beginning. The hours spent reading and re-reading, discussing and giggling over the pictures and the text of The Dog and the Dolphin by James B. Dworkin will forever be a cherished memory.
